Sun online update (Solaris 10)

Hi,

.... what is the idea behind Sun's crappy online update? I mean, I run an online update on my Mac. It checks and installs everthing needed. A reboot is only necessary if there's a new iTunes or Quicktime or kernel or (VERY FEW) other things that are integrated into the kernel. The whole thing takes 20 secs if nothing's there and a few minutes in the worst case.

Next is Linux. My SUSE 10.x take 20-30 seconds to check, 1-2 minutes to download if there's something there and in very very very rare cases a reboot is needed (e.g. when the kernel is updated).

I hate Windows. ;-) But let's see: Start M$ Update and check for updates takes a minute or so. Then downloading and installing and then the ALWAYS NECESSARY reboot takes a few minutes more. My winblows is always updated in less than 10 minutes. I don't care about the 10 minutes. Only the reboot bothers me. But that's another story.

Last and least comes my Blade 150. This one really sucks! I launch the updatemanager. This thing takes like 1-2 minutes to check. Then Sun spits out some 5-10 or so every week. So I select the updates available and install. After some 10-15 minutes of downloading, checking and other Java crap, it finally decides to do nothing more. This happens every other time I start the whole process. If it works at all in the first go, it takes ages, like hours to download and install. The internet connection as well as the system runs idle during that time.

What's wrong with Sun? Can't they do better? I mean, I can't use such a process on our company servers even tho they're only development machines and it is not THAT important to keep them all 100% available at the same time. Still, this is useless!

Sorry, I had to get this out. If you feel offended, then just ignore the rant. :-)
