And make sure you tighten down the screws on terminators and connectors
really hard; just plugging in does not work. Screwing them down firmly is
required. (And there I was, thinking differential was somehow
better than that)

I replaced the cables and terminator. I tightened the screws on all
connectors and I have not seen any warning/error messages for a few
days. I don't know what fixed it though, the cables or tightening of
all connectors. Just happy that it's working now.
