You are correct, but that's not pertinant to this case (see my reply
to Dave for more info).
2. Problem may be due to hme0 and rge0 being in the same IP
subnet. It is possible that when you ping rge0 from the other host, the
ping packets enters via rge0 and then exits via hme0, due to IP routing
rules selecting hme0 as the default local subnet exit interface. Would
certainly explain why no response when hme0 cable is unplugged.
Hmm, that might be it.
This has turned into a non-issue now, because I've just performed the
operation I was hesitant to do: remove hme0 from the picture altogether
by deleting /etc/hostname.hme0. hme0 no longer gets plumbed, and rge0
gets plumbed as before, with the correct IP address, and I can now ping
it and ssh into it. *Shrug*
