It's better but not that much. A XVR-100 (unfortunately still very
expensive, got mine for 64 Euro) is a great improvement.
I'm using my U10 with 1 GB (yes you need 1GB as much as a better
graphics card) and a dual head XVR-100 and a Elite 3D as a 3 monitor
XTerminal Server. It works fine, but i wouldn't use it as a desktop
system where you run applications locally.
Lothar,
Are you using the XVR-100 on an Ultra 10? Sun site doesn't mention
anything about its suitability with Ultra Workstations. Is it a PCI
VGA card?
I have heard that it is a clone of ATI Rdeon 7000 PCI card. Hopefully,
buying an ATI (cheap) should work for me.
from Unixville.com:
"Sun just introduced the Sun Ultra 25 which runs on an UltraSparc-IIIi
processor and supports up to 8GB of RAM. The CPU is actually pretty
slow and dated at 1.3Ghz, but what gets me is the price. $2,895
starting price?
I don't mean to be rude, but what are they smoking?! And worse, it
ships with the so called Sun XVR-100, aka ATI Radeon 7000. Nice, a
$25-$35 video card at best, with horrible performance. I'm a fan of Sun
stuff, but this machine is just 100% brain dead."
