What is the load of the machine during I/O tests (top, prstat, etc.)?
How busy are the disks, what I/O pattern (iostat -xnz 5)?
.... but there is something a bit weird here. during a first boot of a zone the load goes up to over 6 and it becomes hard to type at the machine. I think something may be hardwarily screwed. No errors are logged (and iostat -E etc shows no errors ever).
