cfgadm -c configure fails silently

Hello, I am attempting to configure a Sun Enterprise 450 server running
Solaris 10 6/06 with two scsi host adapters. The first is a Symbios
scsi adapter, and the second is a SRC/P Intelligent SCSI Raid
controller.
The Enterprise 450 has one 4 disk backplane, which is detected by
Solaris, and all disks are accessible. It also has an additional 8 disk
backplane, which will be connected to either one of the scsi host
adapters. Currently it is connected to the Symbios adapter.
At the OK prompt, probe-scsi shows correctly all disks on the 4 disk
backplane. probe-scsi-all displays all disks on the 4 disk backplane
and the 8 disk backplane, with the appropriate manufacturers labels and
so on. show-devs shows that the SRC/P and Symbios scsi adapters are
connected.
At the Solaris level, running:
cfgadm -l
shows c0 c1 and c2 as configured, and c3 and c4 as unconfigured.
running:
cfgadm -c configure c3 c4
finishes with no error message, but a subsequent cfgadm -l shows c3 and
c4 as unconfigured.
cfgadm -v -c configure c3 c4
does not produce any messages, either.
I have performed boot -r to see if solaris would pick anything up, to
no avail. I tried touch /reconfigure just in case, and nothing there
either.
any help would be apprecciated!
