Hello,

Is there a dummy version of /dev/audio that will work with Netra-T4
running Solaris 8? There is no sound card on the system and an
application (extremely poorly written) we use will crash when it
attempts to use the hardware.
Thanks
No idea if this would work so if it's an extremely bad idea ( hey just
an oracle dba here ) let me know.

Could you create /dev/audio as a symbolic link to /dev/null?

Except for the case of the most trivial audio client imaginable
(just takes whatever the default device mode is and throws data at it),
no, that wouldn't be an acceptable substitute.

I've long thought that a STREAMS equivalent of /dev/null would be cool;
just a generic one, but with multiple minor devices, so that they
could be set up as needed with modules autopushed on them to give them
the "personality" of a tty, audio device, etc. They might also be
useful for testing of streams modules, as well as for providing
non-functional but properly behaving dummy devices. Probably the first
few would be reserved for common cases; a minimal STREAMS device, a
tty, an audio device, maybe one or two other obvious things.

Another that might be useful would be the lowest-level sort of software
loopback device (no, ticlts is _not_ a useful substitute).

Why not just put in a cheap audio card (no speaker - no sound)? Then you can run the app, keep it happy, and go on to worse problems ;-)

Don't give up on your dreams.
Wait a bit and they'll give up on you
and you can start again without all of that guilt.
