1) Moving disks within the same array

I have one specific slot [1,5] where a drive failed ( maintenance light on
). So I pulled it out, replaced it with a new one. Green light came on,
and then after a few seconds, maintenance lights again.
Tried 2 other drives with the same results.

Typically, the LED will go green and then amber when you insert a disk.
Then, there will be a delay of about a minute, after which it will go
back to green and become busy because of the rebuild.

drivutil can see whatever drive ( manufacturer, model, and size ) in [1,5]
but marks it as Failed. I tried failing the drive and reviving it,
to no avail.

At that point, you probably need to shut down the server and cold
start the A1000. Then, check the status of the drives again. Once
it decides that a drive has failed it sometimes takes a restart to
convince it otherwise.

So my suspicion falls on the slot in 1,5 itself. What I am now thinking is
moving the drive that originally failed in [1,5] to a different slot ...
but will this cause problems as the DACStore on the failed drive believes
it should be in 1,5 instead of a different slot ???

I once had exactly that problem. I was convinced it was a bad slot.
Part of the problem may have been that the first drive I inserted
contained LUN information from another A1000. A cold start brought
the slot back to life. My practice now is to insert each new drive
in a server and use `format' to write over the whole drive, before
inserting it into an A1000.

It's also important to allow sufficient time between removing one drive
and inserting another into the A1000. If you are inserting more than
one drive, check the status after each one.

Most of this information is available at docs.sun.com.

Thanks for all of that. I'll try cold-starting the A1000 and the attached
host, and see if the slot with amber lights will change to green.

On another A1000, I have a slot that has no lights at all. Well, if I pull
the drive out and put it back in, it shows green light, then after a few
seconds, no green light ... not even amber.
