On my Ultra 10 running Solaris 10 with a Belkin USB card, I found that
stopping vold before plugging in the USB and then restarting vold always
works. (I realise that this does not answer your question but it may
give you a workaround.)

That's not possible. I am not root. But why this helps? Is vold the
problem? It is mount that does not work.
