Hello everyone,
I'd appreciate some assistance with a rather perplexing problem (to me
anyway :-)).
I bought a used Ultra 5 box on eBay a while back and have never gotten
it to work reliably. Didn't help that half-way through my project I
had to change the PROM chip that tracks the NIC address but I assumed
that that was the cause of all the problems, and once I changed that
I'd be golden. Wrong!
The problem is that the box (which I'm using only as a web server) runs
well for at most 18 or so hours, then the keyboard becomes
unresponsive. I also can't SSH into it (though pings continue to
work), and I've got to do a cold reboot to get things going again.
Setting a cron job to reboot the box every 12 hours didn't help either;
the behavior still persists. Doing a dmesg doesn't show anything that
I can discern as helpful in resolving this problem. Any assistance
with resolving this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Did you install Solaris on the box yourself? If not, it might be helpful to do so.
When it hangs, you might try a Stop-A and type "sync" at the ">" prompt. ISTR that this is the "magic" that will write a crash dump. There might be something to be learned from the dump (it will require someone who knows how to analyze a dump).
Another possible fix is to download the latest release (11/06) and install that. That should have eight months or so of bug fixes in it.
It's also possible that the Web server (Apache???) is part or all of the problem. An application should not be able to wedge the O/S like that but things happen!
