Does it have a CD-ROM drive then? Perhaps you can use the bootable
CD-ROM install images.

Does it have a network interface card which supports PXE or some other
sort of network boot?

There are more options than just `DVD drives'.

However, from reviewing the entire discussion, it seems pretty clear
that the answer to my original question is "No, Sun is not sincere
about encouraging new Solaris users."

I don't think so. This is not the impression I got from reading the
same thread, so there must be some between-the-lines-reading hidden
somewhere behind this conclusion.

I regard that as unfortunate. In spite of the personal ad hominem
attacks mixed into the thread, I think I do appreciate a good OS as
well as or better than most folks. Heaven knows I've suffered with
enough bad ones over the years. However, I also appreciate Larry's
three virtues. Or perhaps I should simply state that I am not a
masochist looking for fresh forms of pain. The evidence is pretty
clear, both from Sun's website and this discussion, that Sun is
indifferent or even hostile towards new users.

This is, yet again, not my impression. Remember that regardless of what
people post to Usenet, none of the Usenet posts do not represent Sun,
the company. Please do not assume that one or more Usenet posts are the
official position of Sun and then attack this supposedly official
position as a very conveniently available strawman.

Sun's decision not to encourage new Solaris users is obviously
reasonable in some ways.

It's not reasonable, because it has definitely *not* been demonstrated
that this is a `decision' of Sun.
