Maybe. But is it wrong? Do you actually call the update method
elegant? How do you update just, for example, ssh to the latest
version of Solaris? Where are the patches?
Live Upgrade is an absolutely wonderful technique. Even when installing
patches in production environments it's outstanding. You can always roll
back to a previous state.
You can usually roll back with patchrm(1m) or with ufsrestore(1m). No
need for ugly separate disk or partition.
Either you go the Solaris way and then you patch (with LU if you are
serious)
Are you trying to criticize quality of Solaris patches?
But lets see what comes out of Murdocks entrance to the scene...
1. It should be nice to have 1:1 mapping of patches and packages, so one
can be sure if new packages are installed from local media that one can
really see what patches must be applied when tool for patch analysis is run.
2. To have a tool for remote package installation like apt, up2date,
yum, etc ... (pca is ok for patches).
3. To have more serious dependencies tracking like Red Hat and Debian [1].
4. Extend SVSV package depend(4) mechanism - allow it to depend on
single files, not just on packages.
[1] I have never saw in this century broken library dependency on Red
Hat, but on Solaris, I noticed couple of them - for example, you can
install SUNWsmcmd package without installing SUNWsmagt package (where
shared libraries needed by tools in SUNWsmcmd resides) and so on ...
