Re: Is Solaris 10 a good home os?

Because lusers never install support pack and vendor software agents for
brand name hardware (health snmp drivers, controller nic agents etc ...)

it turns out the RAID controller wasn't too good at letting you
actually replace a failed disk (both of these were with systems made by
a very reputable manufacturer).

On HP with SmartArray it is just hot-swap: pull out failed drive, pull
in new drive, it will be synchronized in 10-12 minutes (yes!). Sistem
will work without interruption all that time.

I reckon that the kind of RAID
controller I trust is the kind where I can log into it to see what it's
doing.

Like with hardware RAID?

HP ProLiant (RHE Linux):

# hpacucli 'controller slot=0 physicaldrive all show'

Smart Array 6i in Slot 0

array A
physicaldrive 2:0 (port 2:id 0 , Parallel SCSI, 144.4 GB, OK)
physicaldrive 2:1 (port 2:id 1 , Parallel SCSI, 144.4 GB, OK)

# hpacucli 'controller slot=0 logicaldrive all show'

Smart Array 6i in Slot 0

array A
logicaldrive 1 (142.2 GB, RAID 1+0, OK)

Sun v40z (Solaris 10):

# raidctl -l
RAID Volume RAID RAID Disk
Volume Type Status Disk Status
------------------------------------------------------
c1t0d0 IM OK c1t0d0 OK
c1t1d0 OK
