Because lusers never install support pack and vendor software agents for
brand name hardware (health snmp drivers, controller nic agents etc ...)
Because those didn't exist, didn't work, or caused the machines to be unstable (some of each: didn't exist for Solaris, didn't work for Windows, and either for Linux depending on kernel version).
On HP with SmartArray it is just hot-swap: pull out failed drive, pull
in new drive, it will be synchronized in 10-12 minutes (yes!). Sistem
will work without interruption all that time.
With, say, a pair of 72GB drives, then resyncing a mirror in 12 minutes translates to a sustained read/write rate of 100MB/sec. So, um.
I reckon that the kind of RAID
controller I trust is the kind where I can log into it to see what it's
doing.
Like with hardware RAID?
No, not like that.
What I can't understand is what advantage these HW-RAID-for-system-disks things give you? Apart from making the machine more expensive, of course.
