Can not build /dev/rmt entries

Hi folks,
I've got a Solaris X86, V8 system that is running on an old, old, old, (Did
I say old?) P-II Intel box. It's been running for a long time but I've
never installed a scsi device on it. Now I'm trying to install a old
Adaptec AHA-1542cf card and an Exabyte EXB-8200 tape drive. My problem is
that I can't seem to get the system to build the entries in the /dev/rmt
location.
In booting the computer, the scsi bios works and it reports the presence of
the tape drive properly. From the information I've pulled up from my
searches, here are some of the commands I've tried:
devfsadm -i st Pauses for a second then returns to cmd prompt. /dev/rmt
still empty
tapes Same result.
I've checked the address, port#, IRQ, and DMA settings. I believe them to
be okay.
I've checked the /kernel/drv/st.conf file and it seems to have the right
entries.
mt status Gives response of "/dev/rmt/0n: No such file or
directory"
cfgadm -lav cfgadm: Configuration administration not supported
I've rebooted a number of different ways:
touch /reconfigure ;reboot
reboot -- -r
From a CD-Rom and built a new boot environment
When I check the messages file after a reboot -- -rv, I find the following:
Jun 26 20:41:46 solleo pseudo: [ID 129642 kern.notice] pseudo-device:
devinfo0
Jun 26 20:41:46 solleo genunix: [ID 936769 kern.notice] devinfo0 is
/pseudo/devinfo@0
Jun 26 20:41:49 solleo scsi: [ID 193665 kern.notice] sd0 at ata1: target 0

Jun 26 20:41:49 solleo genunix: [ID 936769 kern.notice] sd0 is
/pci@0,0/pci-ide@7,1/ide@1/sd@0,0

Jun 26 20:41:49 solleo fdc: [ID 114370 kern.notice] fd0 at fdc0
The tape drive is on scsi id #2 and the AHA-1542cf is on scsi id #7.
Can anyone help me figure out why I'm not getting the entries for the tape
drive to be built in the /dev/rmt directory?
TIA
BobW
