Re: pathetic patches

I end up having to reinstall Solaris from CD every time I try to install
patches, and I'm not happy!

The system is a Sunblade 100 running Solaris 10 (3/05 HW1). I tried to
install the Solaris 10 Recommended Patch Cluster a couple of times
almost a year ago. Almost all patches gave a return status of 45 -
"Unable to copy patch data to partial spool directory" - whatever that
means. When I later tried to reboot the computer it displayed the
following:

Boot device: /pci@1f,0/ide@d/disk@0,0:a File and args:
not found: cpu_init_cache_scrub
not found: mmu_init_kernel_pgsz
not found: mmu_get_kernel_lpsize
krtd: error during initial load/link phase
panic - boot: exitto64 returned from client program
Program terminated
ok

The above was done with ./install_cluster -nosave.
I later heard somewhere that the -nosave option could be causing the
problem, so I tried again without this, and once again had to
reinstall from CD. After that I gave up trying to patch Solaris 10
until a few days ago.

The most recent attempt was made using "Patch Check Advanced" from
http://www.par.univie.ac.at/solaris/pca/ This got off to an excellent start, spending about 6 hours downloading
and installing over 300 patches, almost all successfully. Patch
installation finished, and the time came to reboot...

Boot device: disk File and args:
SunOS Release 5.10 Version Generic_125100-10 64 bit
(This looks good - the version has incremented from the 118822-10
shown when booting from CD)
Copyright blah blah
Use is subject to license terms

The little slash thing rotated for a while, and then stopped at "/"
I left the computer for a couple of hours as I had some other things
to do, but there had been no change when I returned. Furthermore, the
computer did not respond to "Stop-A". The only way to reboot was to
turn the power off and on. Eventually I admitted defeat, pressed L1-A
before it got to the "License terms" line, and typed the command which
follows every attempt to install Solaris 10 patches...
boot cdrom.

Patch installation never gave any trouble under Solaris 9. The problem
under Solaris 10 seems to be very rare since people I've spoken to
haven't experienced it, and I had no replies to a posting on this
subject to comp.sys.sun.admin in September 2006. There is however a
fairly obvious solution - move to a PC running Linux, and stop wasting
time on Solaris!

Since no one else, that we know of, has reported a similar problem it's very likely that there is something about your system that is causing the problem. I can't imagine what it might be but others may have a better imagination than I!
