What might cause connectivity to partially stop working?

Hi,

I'm having a very strange problem with Solaris 10 X86 (11/06 - u3). This is installed as a Virtual PC guest. I'm not sure where to start on this problem, so I thought I'd post here about it first.

I have networking configured in Solaris with a 'dnet0' interface, and has an IP address of 192.168.0.62.

Network connectivity with this Solaris instance works normally, but intermittently:

- I can no longer access any other IP addresses on the 192.168.0 subnet except I can still connect to my NAT router (a Netgear RT314), and

- I can no longer access this Solaris instance from any other machines (i.e., ping 192.168.0.62 times out, etc.).

For example, it was running fine for several hours, but just started this problem a little while ago. Then, just now (a couple of minutes elapsed), it started working again.

FYI, here is the "ifconfig -a" and "netstat -rn" right now (when it's working):

bash-3.00# ifconfig -a
lo0: flags=2001000849<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,MULTICAST,IPv4,VIRTUAL> mtu 8232 index 1
inet 127.0.0.1 netmask ff000000
dnet0: flags=1000843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST,IPv4> mtu 1500 index 2
inet 192.168.0.62 netmask ffffff00 broadcast 192.168.0.255
ether 0:3:ff:99:99:99
bash-3.00#
bash-3.00#
bash-3.00# netstat -rn

Routing Table: IPv4
Destination Gateway Flags Ref Use Interface
-------------------- -------------------- ----- ----- ------ ---------
192.168.0.0 192.168.0.62 U 1 20 dnet0
224.0.0.0 192.168.0.62 U 1 0 dnet0
default 192.168.0.1 UG 1 0
127.0.0.1 127.0.0.1 UH 4 1136 lo0
bash-3.00#

[Note: 192.168.0.1 is my NAT router's IP address.]

I *think*, but am not 100% sure that on some occasions, I've been able to get the network working after it fails by:

- ifconfig dnet0 down, then
- reboot my NAT router, then
- ifconfig dnet0 up

But, I'm not 100% sure if it starts working because of the above procedure or because of some fluke.

Like I said, this is a kind of strange problem, and being intermittent doesn't make it any easier to figure out.

Can anyone suggest other things that I should be checking the next time it fails to maybe try to figure out what is causing this problem?

Thanks in advance..

Jim
