heheh, yeah, that's the problem. at least filtering would help the

Yes, a whitelist would be a viable option. Have one directly in pca for
those where the special install instructions are blatantly wrong and
useless, and a local list for those which the admin has read and deemed to
be ignorable.

hmm, yes. a patchrm won't work since it doesn't know which files need
to be rolled back, and a patchadd will overwrite the files in the save
directory. (just guessing here, haven't tried it or looked at the
code.)

Haven't tried it either. Looking at the code has become more complicated
since patchadd isn't a shell script anymore (not that this made it any
faster :). I have done some experiments with interrupting patchadd
(Ctrl-C) in the past, though, and found out that it's surprisingly easy to
end up with an unusable system that way - an empty SUNWcsu/pkginfo file
can be davastating without backups.

oh, absolutely. did you see

http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/sundocs/articles/patch-wn.jsp

apparantly they did some serious work on it, but it doesn't sound like
they addressed the performance problem with updating the contents
file.

Yes, I saw it, but as it seems we won't see the new scheme before Solaris
10 8/07 (the mentioned 119254-42 hasn't been published yet). We'll see how
installing the next big kernel patch will work; I've had my share of
problems with 118833-36/118855-36.

BTW, not sure if I ever mentioned, but these patches had an interesting
way of enforcing a reboot before any other patch could be installed. The
postpatch script created a script /var/run/nopatch, and mounted it over
/usr/lib/patch/pdo (which patchadd/patchrm are linked to). After the next
reboot the mount is gone and the patch utilities start to work as before,
automagically. Quite elegant :)

Speaking of Solaris 10 update 4 (08/2007), I was running pca today with the
patchdiag.xref from Aug/21/2007 and
patch 121430-16 failed to install referencing a latest SUNWlucfg which was
part of 08/2007.
Is this version/release available yet?
