not a good idea.

Compiling and linking are no problem. I can do that. However, having
to copy the files from a Windows machine is a problem. I'm new to
Solaris or any UNIX environment and just learning how to setup Samba.
Well, Samba is not what you need. Have a look at
http://us1.samba.org/samba/docs/SambaIntro.html

"Samba runs on Unix platforms, but speaks to Windows clients like a
native. It allows a Unix system to move into a Windows "Network
Neighborhood" without causing a stir. Windows users can happily access
file and print services without knowing or caring that those services
are being offered by a Unix host."

You need something on your Windows server(?) to share data to Solaris.
NFS is commonly used there and can be provided by the Microsoft SFU
utility. Probably you can also set up an ftp service on your Windows
machine. Both NFS and ftp are native to Solaris, however CIFS/SMB is not
(yet).

I'm a Windows guy.
Then you're much better than me to configure NFS and ftp on a Windows
machine...

I just got to get a Windows FTP server. There should be a shareware
out there somewhere.

I'll google Microsoft SFU utility and check it out. Never heard of it.

Seems as if an old UNIX guy did know something useful about Windows
anyway. ;-)

Services for UNIX is an oldtimer from Microsoft that enables a lot of
POSIX functionality like ftpd and nfsd...
