There's this file in /etc called nsswitch.conf that needs to be fixed.
The too simple way to fix it is to save a copy of nsswitch.conf and then
replace the file by copying nsswitch.dns over it. It may need some more
subtle tweaks. It's been a while since I've needed to do this. My own
machines, being on an RFC-1918 private network do not lend themselves to
DNS. For six machines, maintaining the hosts file is a reasonable thing
to do! As the number of machines involved grows, it becomes
unreasonable pretty quickly!
For years I have had a caching nameserver (BIND) running on my home network. I started doing that in the first place because a Solaris installation will not complete properly without a DNS server which can resolve the hostname/IP address of the Solaris machine.
Then my ISP's nameservers were somewhat slow in their response so I had a second reason to keep my own server running.
I've installed Solaris 8, 9, and 10 on my home machines; one of each. The installation was successful in each case. Each one complained about the DNS servers because the servers I gave it were servers that had never heard of my machines. The Solaris installation process wants to test the DNS servers by looking up it's own name.
You can't reach my machines, largely because of a firewall that insists that all connections be initiated from INSIDE the firewall so there's no point in listing them in any DNS server. From the INSIDE I have DNS service from the outside!
I have four machines that COULD be configured as DNS servers but there's really no point; if I can't reach Comcast's servers, the network is DOWN!
