These are the real thing! The downloads are free. You COULD pay $50 for a copy of "Solaris 10 for Complete Idiots" or some similar volume but you are probably better off with the official documentation.
I'd suggest that you also download a copy of Solaris 10 for whichever architecture you plan to work with, install it, and start working with it! If you have a DVD drive, you can order a copy of Solaris on DVD. It may be free or there may be a modest charge depending on the policy of the week. If you have a CDROM drive you will need to burn your own CDs since Solaris is no longer distributed on CDs. This has been problematic for some people; some CDROM drives do not like home made CDs. Burning your CD's at the slowest available speed may help.
And a new DVD drive would cost, what, $20?
Dunno! I got mine used. And a lot depends on what hardware he already has! A SPARC box with SCSI but no EIDE? On X86 he could probably install just about anything but he didn't specify what hardware he had or intended to use.
