Does that show or explain why ps does stats on file in the /dev/sg/
directory?

Because he can't find the terminal and then searches through /dev.

Adding /dev/zcons doesn't help (in /etc/ttysrch?)?

You're my saviour! After adding /dev/zcons, ps is fast again.

Typically, you won't see a "pause" because other systems may not
have /dev/sg/

Yep. I did not notice a slow down on systems that HAD /dev/sg,
though.

or because the /dev directory entries are in a different
order.

That must be the reason then.

Thanks a lot!
