If you are looking the best value, check out Dell or HP.

Last time I checked (a couple of weeks ago), Sun 1 and 2U boxes were
the best priced.

I just priced Dell SC1435. It is lower than Sun X4140 with comparable
configurations. One thing worth noting though, you can fit 8 drives in
X4140
but only 2 in SC1435.

Exactly. One has to compare apples with apples.

The quotes I had were based on the "maxed out" X4140 configurations on
Sun's store. I'm sure there are smaller configurations were Dell or HP
would be better value, but offer less expansion options.

They don't really make exactly the same systems. X4140 is more expandable
while SC1435 has more configuration options.

Overall I think Dell is a better deal unless you really need to stuff
more
than 2 drives in this 1U system.

Or in our case, 64GB of RAM and 4 NICs! I'm also a big fan of hot-swap
PSUs. In your case, it sounds like you would have been paying for
features (like the hot-swap parts) you didn't want.

See the table 2/3 of the way down

Hmm, the prices are missing from this table. OP is looking for the best
value. If he doesn't need any of the extras, that would be a moot point.

I am not biased toward any vendor. Just pointing out the facts. It is up to
OP to decide what he needs.
