But how do I get rid of SVM configuration which would probably try to
boot from its own world?
At the end of /etc/system there is:
* Begin MDD root info (do not edit)
rootdev:/pseudo/md@0:0,10,blk
* End MDD root info (do not edit)
I could comment that out and edit /etc/vfstab after ufsrestore (I'm
assuming boot from network for ufsrestore work), but I doubt that's
all there is to it. Is there a documentation about this procedure
somewhere?
I think that is enough. At least that two are good enough to boot
broken mirror from first disk on x86.
But why don't you migrate to ZFS with LiveUpgrade? As guys already
said, u6 supports booting from ZFS... And you can (more or less)
easily do that from the SVM mirror configuration.
Just because I don't think it's already been said in this thread, I'll
go ahead and note that AFAIK update 6 adds support for ZFS root
*mirrors*. This is a wonderful thing, and indeed the common use case,
but I didn't see the OP mention his actual SVM configuration, which
could involve striping. To the OP I would suggest that ZFS is
substantially more robust in general than hardware RAID (based on the
checksumming). I would also refer him to zpool scrub if he decided to
go that route for his concerns of detecting errors. Also, smartmontools
is relatively portable and easy to compile for Solaris in my experience,
YMMV of course. I have been running ZFS on a Thumper since November in
production with excellent results (3-way mirror for rpool, and a 22-way
stripe-mirror set for a data pool, plus a hot standby disk). Also I'd
concur with the above that if you just want to ditch SVM, the
/etc/system and /etc/vfstab mods are probably sufficient, but deleting
the metadb replicas wouldn't hurt either.
Good luck, whichever route you go.
