We have a few E220R servers that need to be upgraded, but I noticed

What are the choices? I'd like the smallest footprint possible.

See if the apps will function in a Solaris 9 container running on
Solaris 10.

I don't trust containers much. We also have Oracle and Veritas Cluster
services on this box (all tested on 5.9 only). I really need to run
native 5.9. I did check the Sun HCL today, and for some reason they
don't list old OS versions for their HW. For example, for E220, they
only note that it supports 10 but don't mention anything about earlier
versions.
