As I noted earlier, that gives me only the x4200 M2. Are they very
similar machines? I thought I'd found a way to get the docs on the
x4200, but whilst the page had the docs for loads of x86 servers, the
x4200 seems to be absent.

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/systems/patches/firmware/release-history-jsp-138416.html#X4100
seems to have the firmware, but I can't work out how to download it. I
just get a blank page with Firefox on my Sun. I might try with
internet explorer later.

Dave,

Found this link:

docs.oracle.com/cd/E19121-01/sf.x4100/819.../819-1157-23.pdf

(Google search: sun x4200 / x4200 m2 differences)

which is the service manual for both machines. From a cursory
inspection, looks like the x4200 was the early version, while the
-m2 was the later, perhaps with a few tweaks, but the service manual
is common to both.

At least solaris should run fine on this machine, whereas the hcl for
other vendors hardware can be quite limited and / or, one suspects that
compatability testing won't be so thorough. I found Solaris 10 Intel
ran fine on a DL380 G4, whereas on an ML350 G4, I was getting
occasional memory fail, front panel and motherboard leds on. Swapped
out memory and tried on another machine, but problem persisted, though
s10 just kept going. Suspect that, in fact, there was no memory problem
and there was a problem at driver / kernel level for this machine, Bios
f/w all up to date etc, but no time to investigate further and would
rather be running sparc hw anyway...

Regards,

Chris
