Re: LiveUpgrade and zones behaving badly

Hiya folks,
I've just gotten into the mystical world that is liveupgrade, on

Seems like a luverly thing... until you get zones invovled. Then it
seems to get Very Bad :(

First off, does anyone have some recommended docs on what actually
happens in this scenario?
There seems to be extreme black juju happening. zfs clones, snapshots,
and all kinds of fun.

Secondly.... how does one delete a BE forcibly?
I managed to get one of the old ones into a point where one of the
zones no longer ran.
So ludelete did not work any more.

I manually booted into the BE  (boot diskX), and deleted the zone.
and the filesystem.

now, back in the normal one, ludelete STILL fails. Complains about not
being able to moutn that filesystem.

I attempted to recreate that BE, from my currently working BE.
lumake fails.. again, because it cant mount that filesystem.
I dont WANT it to mount that filesystem i just want all that stuff go
go bye-bye!
The BE, the extra data, the cloned zfs filesystems, the snapshots..
everything cleaned up.

Should that be so hard? ?   :(

Hi Phil,

It shouldn't be this hard but consider that LU preceded zones by
about
10 years. Getting all this stuff to work together was no small task.
I've gone a few rounds with LU myself.

If you are using a ZFS BE, I included the supported ZFS/LU/Zones
configurations here:

http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23823_01/html/819-5461/ggpdm.html

In the meantime, I'm not sure how to advise you to repair your
broken BE, but you might poke around in /etc/lu. The ICF.# files
contain the name of the BEs and their corresponding file
systems.

Not much help now but if you're using ZFS (and UFS is probably
similar), you need to know how to configure your zones so
that they can be upgraded by LU.

Thanks,

Cindy
