In the old days, like OSF1, there was a disktab file with entries for
each hard drive. The way it came from DEC was it had entries for all
the DEC disk drives ... if you wanted to use a Seagate you had to type
in an entry with the physical geometry and the partition scheme, and
give it a name. The when you uused the MAKEDEV command you would
refer to that entry and your disk would be set up and ready for making
the file system.

When I started using Tru64 it was version 5.1. 5.1 autodetects any
hard drive you put into the machine, assigns it a "dsk" number, writes
up and stores the physical geometry somewhere. You can make the
filesystem and size partitions with a graphical interface under the
sysman utility without having to type a word.

I've had good luck with cheap SCSI disks on my own PWS ... if the disk
is good Tru64 will find it and put in on-line.
