If you have a lot of files and directories either side of the rsync can
consume all the available swap space. Check on the Tru-64 lazy-swap
settings on both sides to make sure that maximum swap space is available.

You can break the rsync up into smaller pieces - this is also wise if you
have an unstable network.

Another potential problem is a bad spot on the disk - look for disk errors.
