if you look you can license hpux to use on a personal system at no cost.
note this does NOT include media or any ancillary software (such as
compilers).. just the license to use. if you snag a copy of 11i via ebay
for $30 (as I did), own a 9000-series workstation you can obtain a
license to use.
.. and from what I can tell (and also being an owner of said platforms),
IBM/AIX, SGI/IRIX do NOT have a hobbyist/personal program that allows
one to obtain OS and compilers/etc for cheap/nil. I know you can get
Solaris from Sun (but dunno if dev tools are included). It seems to me
Tru64 is the exception to the rule, not HP.
and fwiw, snagging the os media on ebay should be sufficient for any
major system. open-source tools are becoming available on every major
platform as a viable alternative to their costly counterparts (in
function at least.. if you need the optimization or custom tailoring
required by a mfg. compiler, bite the bullet and shell out).
