    I would ignore that advice, proves nothing.

    Try this as root if your not already. Ie Make sure /etc/svc.conf and
    /etc/resolv.conf are world readable.

    Your /etc/resolv.conf is missing domainname
    Is your hostname alpha01.theriver.com or just alpha01 ? I don't think either
    of these are your problem but I believe in having hostname Fully qualified
    on Tru64 and having domainname and even search in /etc/resolv.conf
