I've a 500au connected to an el-cheapo switch from Cameo
Communications, and the connection is excellent. Neither
the switch nor the 500au report any problems, and I get
quite respectable transfer speeds (9000kB/s).

Looks like a hardware issue between the 2950 and the 500au;
there are reports of similar issues between Sun hme nics and
certain Cisco routers.

Buy a cheap 5-port switch and see if that fixes the problems.
