perhaps the battery on the mainboard?

I found that the one that works would show the same symptoms if hooked up to a "multimedia" keyboard instead of a generic one and my AlphaServer 1200s are VERY picky about ram, but this is just plain odd. I even tried to connect to the serial console, but nothing (unless the procedure for doing such is any different from Sun or Cisco). Any help is greatly appreciated.
I was about to post this to comp.sys.hp.hardware, but its apparently a different "class" of people from similarly named comp.sys.sun.hardware... if i should post this elsewhere, then please advise. thanks again.
