I picked up 2 rack mount 164ls 533mhz Alphas yesterday for $40 a piece at a local electronics/computer shop, but they came with ARC. Since I planned to install FreeBSD on one and Gentoo on the other I got v5.8 of the lx164srm.rom from DEC and flashed the first. All went well and it brings up the SRM prompt now, but the other will only show a blue screen with flashing cursor in the upper left. The machines are identical and the same procedure was followed for both (picked "AlphaBIOS Upgrade" while the floppy was in the drive).
Any ideas on what to do? Should standard procedure be to flash it twice to make sure it went on there? It did pass the "Verify" procedure... I found that the one that works would show the same symptoms if hooked up to a "multimedia" keyboard instead of a generic one and my AlphaServer 1200s are VERY picky about ram, but this is just plain odd. I even tried to connect to the serial console, but nothing (unless the procedure for doing such is any different from Sun or Cisco). Any help is greatly appreciated.
I was about to post this to comp.sys.hp.hardware, but its apparently a different "class" of people from similarly named comp.sys.sun.hardware... if i should post this elsewhere, then please advise. thanks again.
