asked and answered. Did you do a "cat el" from the SRM console to see
if any errors are trapped there?
nothing unusual. seems to be a more verbose list of boot messages but only for this boot. no errors or failures of any kind that i can tell. simply kbd/mouse init, no mouse detected, vga stuff (console init) and references to the x86 bios being loaded/unloaded.
Next, what SRM firmware revision are you running? AND...if you've
updated it yourself since you acquired the box, do you recall if ARC
and any options were updated too? Was this machine EVER setup to run NT
(unlikely)? I know this sounds like I'm fishing and just like to read
my own Usenet posts but I'm going somewhere with this.
v5.7-4 27-Mar-2000
came with SRM and was in a cluster so i doubt it ever had AlphaBIOS.
My gut tells me that you have a power supply with a faulty rectifier
circuit so when power requirements for I/O and the CPUs increase, the
voltage regulator overloads. Next on my list, you maybe have a
replaced the power supply.
now re-encoding 2 140MB videos from my security camera into DIVX AVI as a test of the CPU at least.
from top:
PID USERNAME PRI NICE SIZE RES STATE TIME WCPU CPU COMMAND
798 root 126 0 46816K 29368K RUN 0 3:49 93.60% 93.60% mencoder
828 root 126 0 46816K 30008K CPU1 1 1:01 95.48% 91.60% mencoder
Check, clean, and reseat the Molex connectors to the fans and the power
connector to the drive cage.
done. ran a micro file down the connectors and on the new power supply then blew it out.
i'll find out sometime before Saturday if it worked or not. thanks again for the tips.
