Re: Will a PC ATX PSU fit a PWS 500?

Similar but wiring is completely different

Having checked this out, the wiring to the 20-pin ATX connector is identical on both standard PC-style and DEC PSUs except for the colours of some of the wires - ie, Digital used brown leads for the +3.3v supply while the ATX standard is orange, and blue for +12v while ATX is mostly yellow (with one blue lead on the ATX connector).

The only thing that is really different is the 10-pin auxiliary power connector which supplies +3.3v and +5v to the mainboard, which has a jumper link between the two pins furthest from pin 1. An adaptor could be made to provide these feeds from the existing voltages available on the other PSU cables to a similar 10-pin connector. As we have a lot of good 350W+ ATX PSUs taken from scrapped PCs, it would seem to be a good idea to try this.

FYi we have them for $189 + shipping

I'm in the UK and unfortunately, the management of this institution are trying to get rid of Alphas which they neither understand nor support. So I'm not in a position to actually spend anything on these systems, just to keep them going as best as I can for those who prefer using them still.

The power supply in one of our PWS 500au's has failed. It looks pretty
much like a PC-style ATX PSU to me so would a good quality ATX PSU of at
least 400W rating be suitable as a replacement?
